Devil or Poison

When Mrs. Fitz’ nephew falls ill after visiting the black Kirk, Claire is sure he is not possessed. With Jamie’s accompaniment, Claire explores the kirkyard. Through conversation and exploration, a plant comes into view. It is thought to be edible wood garlic, but is in fact, lily of the valley, a poisonous plant to ingest.

Racing back to the cottage where Father Bain is administering rites, Claire implore Mrs. Fitz that she believes she has the antidote to cure the near death boy.

Father Bain deems Claire unfit for such a job. Mrs. Fitz pulls rank and Claire proceeds.

The boy lives. Father Bain is angry and belief crushed that a woman cured the boy. Mrs. Fitz and Claire win this round against misogyny and death.
