This week’s Voyager read-a-long episode is all about “Circumstances and Choices,” with a side of drunken turtle soup for our immense enjoyment. Listen here.
Claire is recovering from the saber slash resulting in 43 sutures along her right arm. She finds herself in need of the limited penicillin she brought with her from the 20th century. Jamie must help her with this task. In this, Claire shares of the patient that sent her to Scotland where she met Roger Wakefield, subsequently sending her back to Jamie. Choices had altered her circumstances, unwittingly putting her on the path back to Jamie.
If it wasn’t for her patient, would she have gone at all? I’d like to think it would’ve happened no matter what, but that question ultimately cannot be answered.
Jamie for the first time in his life faces the possibility of choosing what to do after Young Ian is found. He’s never been in this position before. The world is his oyster. His new circumstances will pave the way for untold choices.
Like Jamie, Temeraire faces a choice to go with Ishmael or stay aboard the Artemis. He, too has never had the question of what he wants posed to him, maybe ever.
There’s a depth to these shorter chapters. These words a mere taste for all that is covered within. It seems when one thinks there’s no choice in the matter or circumstances, there’s no need for courage or bravery. Maybe so, maybe no. You’ll have to listen to find out.
What’s Coming up? Week 2w will cover chapters 58-59.
