This week’s episode, “A Dissonant Loyalty,” has the trio of Jamie, Lord John, and wee Tom Byrd, returning to London. They’re so worse for wear that Minnie will not allow them in to Argus House without a proper bath and quantity of brandy consumed. The Duchess of Pardloe has fabulous style and authority!

She sends for Hal to come home from Parliament. She and Jamie confer while waiting for John to join them in the large sitting room. Before he can ask what, they were talking about so conspiratorially, Hal returns. John fills him in on all that happened while in Ireland. Hal is amused to find his brother a fugitive from Athlone Castle prison and wanted for murder.

After all is said, Minnie brings up the possibility of a posthumous court-martial against Major Siverly. This idea is intriguing and totally on point. They decide this avenue will be pursued as soon as possible. The Judge Advocate signs off on this pursuit, and now they must wait.

Jamie surprises Thomas Lally, the other paroled prisoner who helped with the Wild Hunt translation, to get a message to Tobias Quinn. He knows Quinn must be in London pursuing the latest Jacobite uprising. Jamie is torn between his comrades and the knowledge he knows to be true. No Jacobite plan can work. It’s a hopeless cause. All he can do is try to save the men involved from the devastation he and others experienced post-Culloden. It’s a bittersweet pursuit for Jamie.

John and Jamie not much for idle time, keep themselves busy. After a short trip, they go to John’s gentleman’s club to get refreshed and prepared for an evening play. As usual, things don’t go as planned for them. Edward Twelvetrees is at the club playing billiards. An absolute row breaks out from he and John exchanging insults and accusations. Jamie steps in and makes a speech no one is likely to forget. Why this loyalty to John?

In the end, it doesn’t matter why Jamie stood up publicly for John. What matters is what John does next regarding Twelvetrees and Major Siverly being court-martialed.
