The Scottish Prisoner Podcast Series
Chapters 33 and 34
Week 17
The week 17 The Scottish Prisoner installment, “An Unwitting Hero,” has Lord John comfortably convalescing from his saber injuries, under the watchful eyes of his valet Tom Byrd and his sister-in-law Minnie. John finds himself emotional over the love surrounding him in the house. His brother Hal, his nephews, Minnie, and Tom. It’s difficult for him not be get tearful. An unexpected benefit of his killing Twelvetrees is his elevated status as hero. Jamie’s public denouncement of Twelvetrees being a traitor, is the word the public is believing. Only a select few know the truth behind why John dueled Twelvetrees. The other side benefit to John is a slew of female admirers who love a man who wins a duel. He asks Minnie to burn those letters. Poor John, as he says, he’s not suitable to be a husband.
Wearing a fanciful banyan and with the support of Tom Byrd, he carefully makes his way down to the library, where he finds Jamie sitting absorbing yet more reading material. He expects Jamie to tell him “if the blow had gone between your ribs, you’d be dead, you know.” Jamie doesn’t. He was quite sure John would survive. To John’s shock Jamie had picked him up off the ground and carried him to the awaiting carriage. Jamie says he was only doing as John had asked. Poor John passed out, having no memory of being in Jamie’s arms. He then inquires after the military operation at hand and the posthumous court-martial of Major Siverly. Jamie fills him in on all aspects from his earlier conversation with Hal. The subject of Tobias Quinn arises. Jamie of course would warn him if he knew where he was. Friendship and loyalty are at the heart of their divergent positions.
John is left to wonder if he and Jamie are again friends.
