imageOk…last week, I wrote off the cuff my first impressions of episode 5.  And, a lot of you know how that went! So, I, of course, decided I might as well continue cuff writing for episode 6.  (You’d think I’d learn, but evidently…no)

I had heard this episode was going to be good, so I purposely avoided watching previews and reading cast interviews in an effort to increase my viewing pleasure. It was more than pleasurable, good Lord that was intense. Tobias and Cait’s performance was worthy of every award appropriate adjective I can muster. Bravo! Brava! Bellisimo!  You dun good!  I usually watch the episode back to back, but I couldn’t muster the emotional energy! I feel spent. I feel like I need a cigarette and I don’t smoke!

Oh how I love this piece. It is a felted waistcoat. The furry “spine” was supposed to go down the back and the waistcoat opens in the front. But Lotte said, “what if I wear it backwards?” We turned it around and the started creepily stoking the spine. It was perfect. The skirt is this extraordinary skirt we made from a beautiful linen wool fabric from Ireland. The skirt is made with the wrong side out. At the last minute I tied her sleeved at the elbow with leather thong. It just seemed like the thing to do.

When we shot the scene of Claire getting dressed with Mrs. Fitz, Ron insisted that we film the entire sequence. “Are you sure?” I asked, “It takes about 30 minutes !!” But he insisted. He knew it would help to tell the story of a stranger in a strange land. Since the beginning Ron has said that the world Claire lands in, had to be as foreign as if she had landed on another planet.

If any of us, who throw on underwear, t shirt and jeans, before leaving the house, suddenly droppedinto 1947, we would have to don underwear, garter belt, seamed stockings, dress, gloves, and hat before going out. Actually, you would…
